The French presidential election that finally ended last Sunday was like some kind of fascinating championship playoff. The match pitted conservative Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement against Segolene Royal of the Socialist Party. It was a traditional left-right confrontation typical of French politics, with a gender twist that made people feel that things were changing in France.

We foreign residents of Paris have no right to vote, but that didn't stop us from constantly talking about the election. In the 26 years since 1981,[http://www.abercrombieandvfitchmagasin.com abercrombie and fitch france], France has had two presidents. Francois Mitterrand held the position for 14 years and Jacques Chirac for 12. Foreign news outlets were particularly interested in Sarkozy,[http://www.christianlouboutinuuk.com christian louboutin], this new French leader in his 50s. German weekly Der Spiegel likened the election to a confrontation between the French heroes Napoleon and Joan of Arc. British weekly the Economist even featured a photo of Sarkozy done up in a Napoleonic costume.

The election ended with "Napoleon" Sarkozy's victory and "Joan of Arc" Royal's defeat. Now, in the aftermath of their loss,[http://www.abercrombieandvfitchmagasin.com abercrombie france], French leftists are even busier than before the election,[http://www.dolcegabbanaemagasin.com dolce and gabbana], trying to figure out why their candidate lost.

Chirac's performance during his 12-year tenure was poor, and his approval ratings and evaluations were low. And yet despite this another rightist won the election. After a 12-year wait the Socialist Party finally had a golden opportunity to take the presidency,[http://www.abercrombieandvfitchmagasin.com abercrombie], but they failed. What happened?

Sarkozy harvested an unexplored "blue ocean" with policies and strategies that were new to France's right. Chirac was clever at exploiting France's national pride -- he would feign passionate tantrums and stalk out of meetings if French wasn't used at international conferences the way English is. In contrast, Sarkozy didn't hesitate to point out France's shortcomings. "France is lagging behind Britain because we work less than the British," he said. With his country mired in high unemployment and low growth, he urged the French to "work harder and make France competitive again."

Meanwhile the Socialist Party behaved as if it were the ruling party rather than the opposition,[http://www.chaussurelouboutinopascher.com louboutin pas cher], campaigning to keep the status quo and singing the party's past glories. It didn't press for change the way other European socialist parties have. Under Prime Minister Tony Blair's "Third Way," Britain's Labour Party guided the economy to a 10-year-long economic boom. In Germany,[http://www.suprashoesastore.com supra shoes], the Social Democratic Party's former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder pushed for reform and laid the foundation for the economic recovery that Germany is enjoying today.

But the French leftists weren't about change. In fact the Socialist Party called for re-nationalizing the public corporations that have been handed over to the private sector -- at a time when even China, a nominally communist country,[http://www.hoganonegozio.com outlet hogan], is changing at a breakneck pace. With France wallowing in debt, the Socialist Party wanted to raise the minimum wage even further and keep the 35-hour work week.

An election is a business that retails dreams and visions. Faced with unpopular sentiment towards his ruling party,[http://www.hoganonegozio.com hogan], Sarkozy came up with attractive new commodities. But the Socialist Party just repackaged its old merchandise by wrapping it in the pretty packing paper of Segolene Royal.

As a result,[http://www.abercrombieandvfitchmagasin.com abercrombie and fitch], the conventional wisdom that those with vested interests will always support the right while workers will always support the left proved wrong. In this election, 49 percent of white-collar voters and 46 percent of blue-collar voters supported Sarkozy. Fifty-seven percent of the young voters between 25 and 34 who wanted change backed Sarkozy. On the other hand,[http://www.suprashoesastore.com supra], 55 percent of those with vested interests between 45 and 59 voted for Royal. Only belatedly has the Socialist Party examined itself and realized that it hasn't changed at all over the past 50 years.

Korea has its own presidential election coming up. Many Korean politicians took a keen interest in the election in France,[http://www.chaussurelouboutinopascher.com louboutin], even though it happened on the other side of the world. But Korean conservatives have no reason to rejoice over the victory of the French right.

What matters is not right or left. The lesson of the French presidential election is simple and clear. It only confirmed what is already commonly known -- any party or politician that fails to understand the current of the times and the public sentiment will be ignored by voters.

This column was contributed by Kang Kyung-hee, the Chosun Ilbo's correspondent in Paris.相关的主题文章:
